Why do I never see club players doing this deadly No Trump signal?…

Most players are familiar with signalling to partner to indicate whether they like a suit or not. Typically this occurs after a lead:

Say partner leads a Queen.
If you respond with a high(ish) card you are saying to partner “I like the suit you’ve just led” = a wink & a smile.
If you respond with a low card, you are saying to partner “I don’t like the suit you’ve led – Consider switching to another suit” = a pout & a sigh.

But I have a great tip for you that I rarely see used in clubs

How to play online Bridge with BridgeBase online: Part 2 video demo

A couple of weeks ago I provided an introductory video on how to use the BridgeBase Online Bridge gaming site.

This week I thought I would go into a bit more detail with video demo no. 2 – ‘A guide to playing online Bridge’ below: Read on. . .

Can Bridge be taught on mass to hundreds of children in one sitting? – Yes

Could you stand in front of a hall of 100 primary school children who have never held a deck of cards before, and in the space of 1 to 2 hours have them sitting in absolute silence as they finger through their cards whilst playing Mini bridge.

It can be done using a revolutionary new system.

In this post, I comment on Matt Betts’ article in English Bridge Magazine where he tells of the EBU’s impressive schools Bridge teaching programme. Read on. . .

BridgeBase Online – A step by step Intro on Playing Online Bridge

I remember the first time I plucked up the courage to play online Bridge – I was very nervous. This fear is not just about playing Bridge and the worry of messing things up for the partner you pair with. The main concern I first had related to the technology: The user interface on the gaming site, knowing how to write messages, understanding the lingo, working out how to navigate around the site etc. All in all, it is quite a scary undertaking.

This week I thought I would provide an introductory video.

An Incident at the virtual BridgeBase Online table

I want to tell you about something that happen to me whilst I was playing on the BridgeBase Online (BBO) website last week. I was given this hand:

AKxxx A AQxx AQx

and was busy counting my points enthusiastically. I particularly like the look of that singleton heart A!

But then guess what? Read on. . .

The killer-punch might be your passive lead

More often than not, when choosing a lead against a no trump contract, one is faced with a series of poor options?

It’s all very well saying lead from an honour sequence Like King from KQJ or from the top of a broken honour sequence like Queen from AQJ, but these luxuries do not present themselves that Read on. . .

What is the connection between bird watching, classical music and Contract Bridge?

During the week, I paid a visit to Slimbridge Wildlife Park. Set along the south bank of the river Severn near to where it spills out into the Irish Sea, Slimbridge is the ideal place where you can plant your elbows on the worn wooden ledges of the observation huts and stare through binoculars for hours to spot the multitudes of birds and seek a glimpse of the rarer bird species.

After a couple of freezing hours in the huts, I retired to the cafe. As I sat there warming my numb hands on a steaming cup of builder’s tea, I looked around at all the other watchers and guess what I noticed?

The Best of iBridge Player 2010

I launch iBridge Player in August 2010 and in that time I have tried to entertain and create something new for my subscribers with each post.

As it’s New Year’s day tomorrow and it is already 22:43, I thought I would just give you a heads up on the year’s most interesting articles. Of course, some of the early ones were not read by many people because nobody new the website existed.

How to get a game in an exclusive Bridge club

This week I had the good fortune to bump into two individuals on two separate occasions that belong to two very exclusive Bridge clubs in London.

This got me thinking. What would it take for me to get a game at either of these exclusive clubs? Both gentlemen were very friendly so perhaps I should have just asked them politely for a game – I am kicking myself that I did not.

Breaking News: “Contract Bridge” is not Cool or Sexy

If you are too busy to read this whole post, I would very much like you to go directly to the end of it and think about the quoted statement, which I received in a private email on the subject of “Youth Bridge”.

But now, on with this week’s post:

As a performing violinist I have managed and promote quite a few classical concerts over the years. My fellow performers and I used to continually agonise over questions such as:

How can we make classical music ‘cool’ for the younger audiences?
How can we attract youth to our concerts?
What do we have to do to rid us of the stuffy classical music image? etc

I wish someone had shoved the coffee smell up my nose by telling me the following… Read on. . .
